About Lady Lex
How It All Began...
Lady Lex is a West London-born singer-songwriter whose music is rooted in reggae, soul, jazz, blues, Motown and country. Born Karen Moon into a music-loving family, she is a second cousin of the late Keith Moon of The Who.
A trained singer, pianist and dancer, she achieved top marks in her Music O Level and later taught singing and dance at the Janet Moon Academy of Dance and a local youth club.
Lady Lex began her professional journey in the early 1980s after an unexpected phone call led to a recording contract with Galaxy Records. Although the material she was asked to perform did not reflect the reggae she loved, the experience strengthened her determination to create music on her own terms.
Following her final performance of that period at Brent Town Hall in 1986, she began writing and producing music at home using a Roland D-10 keyboard, an Atari ST and Steinberg Pro 12.
In the early 1990s, performing under the name Moon, she worked with local musicians and joined an in-house production team connected with Roame Lowry of the internationally renowned band Maze.
She was invited to develop her career in the United States in 1994, but personal commitments prevented her from making the journey.
After dedicating several years to raising her family, Lady Lex returned to music with a clear goal: to release an authentic, "undiluted" record before turning 40.
In late 2004, she visited the legendary Peckings Records shop with an idea for a song on the Lonely Street riddim.
Without a demo, she performed the song for Chris Peckings in the middle of the busy shop. That spontaneous audition led to the recording of "I'm in the Mood for Love" and began a long-standing creative relationship with Chris and Duke Peckings on Peckings Records.
Since then, Lady Lex has enjoyed chart success and recorded for labels and producers including Peckings Records, Cousins Records, World Sounds, Mafia & Fluxy, Lloyd Brown's Riddimworks, Kemar "Flava" McGregor, Donsome Records, BB Seaton, Magnet, Maskii and Ariwa, as well as through her own label, All Inclusive Music.
Her warm, expressive voice and commitment to authentic reggae have taken her to festivals, clubs and major venues across the UK and Europe, including the Sardinia Reggae Festival, O2 Indigo and Proud.
Throughout her career, she has shared the stage with many respected artists and in 2013, Tony Williams presented Lady Lex with an award at the O2 Indigo in recognition of her contribution as a female reggae artist.
The following year, Peckings Records released her much-anticipated album, Is This Love.
In 2015, Lady Lex and her husband, Farda P, founded Chaaawaaa Radio (www.chaaawaaa.com) an internet station dedicated to promoting spiritually positive, lyrically clean and family-friendly music.
Today, Lady Lex continues to write and record music, remaining true to the authentic, undiluted sound that has defined her artistic journey.
